Isn’t this term flying by! Last week, I had the pleasure of accompanying our Kio Kio School team to the COPS inter-school cross country event. I was incredibly proud to watch and support our runners as they put in 100% effort throughout the challenging, rugged course. We had several students place in the top 5 in their age groups, and our school performed exceptionally well across all the teams—congratulations to all our athletes! It was also fantastic to see so many parents cheering on our students.

Over the term, many of our students have been hard at work preparing their speeches. This process has been a valuable learning experience for them, teaching essential skills like researching and developing ideas, structuring their writing, and using techniques to engage their audience. The students have also practiced presenting their speeches, using their voices to captivate and connect with their listeners.

On Tuesday, we held the speech finals and poetry recitals, where our top intermediate and senior students showcased their speeches in front of the whole school and a parent audience. The performances were outstanding, and I would like to extend a huge thank you to Helen Twentyman for organising the event and to our wonderful adjudicators, Linda Blanchett and Heather Taylor, for dedicating their time to judge the speeches.

We are continuing to focus on our POWER values throughout our school environment. This week, we are emphasising RESPECT, which encompasses:

Cyber safety remains a crucial aspect of ensuring our students' well-being, especially given the increase in screen use in society. The Kahui Ako Principal’s Group that I am a part of will be hosting a Parent Cyber Safety Evening at Otorohanga South School on November 6th from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Please mark this date in your diary and make an effort to attend. The evening will cover a range of important topics, including cyberbullying, social media, gaming and the developing brain, smartphones, the three golden rules of online safety, and much more. I will share additional details as soon as they are available. In the meantime, please continue to support our efforts to instill our POWER values in our students.

We believe that regular attendance and punctuality are essential for their success. When students miss school or arrive late, they miss out on valuable learning opportunities and can fall behind.

We kindly ask that you ensure your child attends school on time, every day. Skipping days or arriving late can impede their progress and limit their potential. We understand that unforeseen circumstances can arise, but we will proactively work with you to ensure your child's success.

Please don't be offended if we ask why your child was absent or late. We only want to ensure that they receive the best education and support possible. Together, let's set our tamariki up for success in life by emphasising the importance of attendance and punctuality.

SCHOOL PHOTOS
Photolife are booked on Monday 16th September for all class, individual, sibling and team photos. A notice will be sent home in week 8, which will include a SIBLING form. If you are wanting sibling photos taken, you will need to return this form before photo day.

STUDENTS NOT RETURNING IN 2025
We are presently looking at our student numbers for next year and beginning to carry out a draft roll for 2025.

It is really important that families let us know as soon as possible if their child/ren may not be returning to our school in 2025.

This helps us to determine student class placements for next year.

STUDENTS ENTERING & LEAVING SCHOOL
Please make sure that your child/ren are dropped off and collected from the bus shelter each day.
We are enforcing safety rules at school pick-up and drop-off. Children are NOT to open our school gates. Parents are required to drop off inside the gate and come into the school grounds to collect their children. This is a safety measure. Our carpark is very busy at the end of the day and we need to do everything we can to keep everyone safe.

SCHOOL GATES
A Reminder to shut all school gates behind you please, in particular the large gates on the top and bottom fields. When collecting your children after school, please close the large gate behind you on the top field.

BUS BOOK REMINDER
Please ensure that the school office is informed early if your child won't be on the school bus in the afternoon. We also need to be contacted if your child/ren are getting off at another stop. You can do this by phoning the school office on 07 8731816 or emailing admin@kiokio.school.nz

STUDENT ABSENCES
If your child is going to be absent from school, please advise the office by phone (078731816), email (admin@kiokio.school.nz) or the absent tab on the Parent APP with the reason so the absence can be marked correctly for the Ministry of Education. If the school is not notified, the child is deemed TRUANT and marked accordingly. If your child is late to school, they must come to the office and sign in on the electronic register.

BREAKFAST CLUB VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
We are on the lookout for PARENT VOLUNTEEERS to run the TUESDAY and THURSDAY morning. If you are able to help on one of these days, please contact the school office. Our Breakfast Club runs on Monday - Thursday each week beginning at 8.30am. All students are welcome to receive a bowl of milk and some weetbix before settling into the days work.

Won all Rippa Rugby games (no finals were played)
