Principal's News
Kevin Jones
Kia ora koutou.
Thanks, everyone for your support this term. Our staff appreciated the support they have received at school camps, sports days, and fundraising, and also for communicating with your class teachers when necessary. We look forward to seeing our students back in Term 2 with our main focus, the school production. Also, a massive thank you to our whole school staff. You go that extra mile for your students.
Have an enjoyable and safe break!
SUPPORTERS' COMMITTEE
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I thank our Supporters Committee for the successful fundraising night last Saturday. The amount raised will be prioritised for student resources and other identified projects. This group of parents is awesome to work with and certainly collaborate to share the workload where possible.
STUDENT ATTENDANCE
The new government has developed a strategy for tackling the decade-long decline in regular attendance and engagement in schools, based on what they have heard from the sector through Kōrero Mātauranga and the Education and Workforce Select Committee Inquiry into school attendance. The target requires 80 percent of students to be present for more than 90 percent of the term by 2030. “A key focus is getting a better understanding of the drivers of non-attendance through data. The more we define the problems the more effectively interventions can be targeted.
At Kio Kio School this term we have 92% (137) of students above the 80% mark. Approximately, 13% (20 students) have 100% attendance. We will closely monitor low attendance rates and work with those families if required.
ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (ESOL)
Melisa Lincoln is running our ESOL programme for overseas students identified as requiring this support. Groups of students receive tuition for a set time each day.
TEACHER ONLY DAY (TOD)
All Otorohanga Schools will be holding a teacher-only day next term on Tuesday 4 June, straight after King's Birthday. We will be attending a writing professional development session at Waitomo Caves School presented by Cheryl Hickford from Otorohanga South School. This teacher-only day is in line with Ministry of Education requirements for schools refreshing curriculum.
PRIME DRINKS AT SCHOOL
Can we ask parents to not send any Prime Hydration or Prime Energy drinks to school with their children. We have had incidents with students sharing these drinks. They are not suitable for children under 15 years of age.
THANK YOU
Thank you Peter Telfer for cleaning our pool each weekend during the swimming season. It looked in pristine condition each week which we all appreciated.
