Kia Ora, Namaste, Mabuhay, नमस्ते, Mālō e lelei, Hallo, Howzit, හෙලෝ, Hello, G’day,
As we transition into spring, we often experience all four seasons in a single day! The mornings can be chilly, followed by bright sunshine that prompts students to shed layers, only for rain to cool things down again. While our students are dressing accordingly, we’ve noticed a growing pile of lost property. Please check the lost property area the next time you’re in, especially before the end of the term.
Last week, Mrs. Helen Twentyman organised the Mathletics C.O.P.S. (Combined Ōtorohanga Primary Schools) competition here at Kio Kio School. This event featured students from Years 6-8 competing in various mathematical challenges, including individual problems, the Amazing Mathletic Team race, and team events. Our students demonstrated impressive competitive spirit and achieved fantastic results. Thank you, Mrs. Twentyman, for organising this event.
Last Friday, three Kio Kio School rippa rugby teams competed in the King Country Rippa Tournament at Rugby Park in Te Kūiti. With 47 teams across four sections, each team played at least four pool matches. Our students showed perseverance and respect throughout the tournament, which was truly commendable. Our Year 5 & 6 boys' team made it to the finals and secured 2nd place overall—well done! A huge thank you to Abby Keech for preparing the students with rippa skills sessions, our dedicated parents who transported and managed the teams, and especially Mrs. Emma Telfer for organising our students. THANK YOU!
Yesterday, a group of 12 students had the opportunity to go to Te Awamutu and participate in sailing small yachts at Lake Ngaroto. Each student sailed with an experienced tutor, and they thoroughly enjoyed the thrill and excitement of sailing. It was a fantastic experience for all involved.
Our school’s POWER value focus for this week is OWNERSHIP.
This means:
- I make good choices,
- I support others to make good choices,
- I am in the right place at the right time,
- I self-manage,
- I am honest.
I’ve really noticed that our students are taking ownership and responsibility for their actions—Kia pai te mahi a ngā ākonga - well done students!
Next week marks Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week), with this year’s theme being ‘Ake ake ake – A forever language’. This theme reflects the adaptability and resilience of te reo Māori. Māori Language Week has been celebrated in Aotearoa since 1975 and is a time to celebrate and promote te reo Māori, helping to secure its future as a vibrant and dynamic language. In the mid-20th century, there were concerns about the decline of the Māori language, leading to a Waitangi Tribunal claim in 1985. The tribunal's recommendations prompted significant legislative and policy changes, with Māori being declared an official language of New Zealand in 1987.
A reminder that our school photos are scheduled for Monday, 16th of September. All students will have their photo taken on the day. Photo information has been sent home. PLEASE NOTE: the sibling photo request form needs to be returned to school by 9.00am on Monday morning.
Agriculture Day: This year, we encourage all students to bring a pet from home in the following categories:
- Indoor exhibit
- Lamb
- Calf
- Goat
- Other pet
- Dog
An Ag Day form has been sent home to indicate what your child will be bringing. Please return this form to school as soon as possible so we can plan accordingly.
Finally, we welcome Peter Cornelissen, our new caretaker at Kio Kio School. Peter has already made numerous repairs around the school, and his handyman skills are invaluable. Welcome aboard, Peter!
I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
